The Bowtie Wetland Demonstration is a stormwater treatment site featuring a human-made wetland habitat that will include a variety of upland and riparian (near or at riverbanks) flora and fauna.

The objective is to build a maintained self-sustaining ecological environment that functions in concert with stormwater collection and treatment facilities, showcasing the feasibility and possibilities for future engineered wetlands along the Los Angeles River.

THE ECOLOGY

The demonstration site will feature selected riparian plants that live alongside riverbanks, lakes, or wetlands native to the Los Angeles area. This human-made wetland habitat will attract native riparian animals that will create an ecological environment with the plants.

THE WATER

Water is the foundation of all life and is the basis of the Bowtie Wetland Demonstration. The project will improve the quality of water entering the LA River and reuse water for irrigation purposes to support wildlife in the area. The Bowtie Wetland Demonstration will treat dry-weather flows and partial wet-weather flows from the Los Angeles County Flood Control District (LACFCD) Sycamore Canyon Channel Lower storm drain. Treated flows will be used on-site for irrigation of habitat or be discharged back into the storm drain to outfall into the LA River.
