CALIFORNIA GROUND SQUIRREL

Otospermophilus beecheyi

California Ground Squirrels are a species of squirrel native to parts of the Western US and Baja California. They forage during the day for leaves, seeds, roots, nuts, stems, grains, and fruits, storing food in cheek pouches. They leave extra food in caches for the long term. They dig sometimes-communal burrows under trees, rocks, and logs, which aerate the soil, and which other animals also use.
